Southend Slot Racing Club
#1

Unfortunately we are closed at the moment due to Covid 19 restrictions but under normal circumstances Southend Slot Racing Club meets every Tuesday at Pound Lane, Bowers Gifford, Basildon, Essex. We are a couple of mins drive from both the A13 and A127.

We have a 4 lane routed wood track - lap length approx. 36 metres and run various classes for standard/modified RTR cars and some scratchbuilt classes.

On Fridays, once a month in Winter and twice a month in the Summer we run Vintage events for 1/32 and 1/24 scale cars from the golden age of slot car racing.

For full details of the club, our modern and vintage classes and rules please visit the club website

I am not the administrator for the club site so I don't have any pics of the club saved but have managed to copy the photo below from the home page of our website.
The cars travel away from the start gantry towards the computer screen at the back of the photo. The track is quite fast and flowing and some parts, particularly the esses, are quite tricky to learn. Best lap time for any class is 8.016 seconds with a modified GT car built to club rules.

There are photos of many club members cars under the club cars heading on the club website or if you click the link below it will take you direct to the club cars page

Thanks.  I can't claim any responsibility for the track as it was built 3 or 4 years before I joined the club. Details of the build are on the club website.

I think we are probably the only club in the UK who hold regular vintage race evenings.

In recent years some of us have competed in CSCRA and Policar events and as a result the club ran a Policar event at the end of last year and a NSR F1 event was planned for this May but had to be cancelled.

We also run an annual Vintage Race Meeting the "SSRC Summer Classic" normally in June.

We have to restrict entries for our events as we don't have masses of space in the clubhouse and when the weather plays ball we have occasionally had to resort to having an alfresco pit area for the Summer Classic.

Thanks to my fellow club member Autoavia for alerting me to this Forum.

I am just your average slot racer but I am the person responsible for the Southend club website.

Having posted that we run regular vintage evenings I thought it might be an idea to post pictures of the sort of vintage cars that we run.
I can't post pictures for all of the classes as some of my cars are currently in bits and others aren't finished yet but the following should give some idea :-

1/24 open class.

Matich SR3 with Dynamic chassis and 26D motor.

Lotus 19B with Dynamic chassis and 26D motor

1/24 Hussein Special with scratchbuilt chassis and 26D motor bought from Ebay for just over £50 inc shipping.
I have changed the sponge rears to uretanes but haven't raced this yet as the joint where the guide mount was soldered to the drop arm was cracked and I have repaired it during lockdown

1/24 Revell Lotus 23. Not particularly fast but I love the car and it was the first proper slot car I ever tried on a track in a local car dealer when I was about 10 years old.

1/24 Russkit Honda bought from Ebay USA. The seller had put it away in the late 60's when he stopped racing. Unfortunately the Russkit 23 motor threw a winding second time out so it has a Russkit 22 at present which is a lot slower.

1/32 scale Revell early Ferrari 250 GTO with set screw wheels

and finally Monogram 1/32 Ford GT40 and Ferrari 275LM. Both have the same drop arm type chassis.

That's all at the moment. Hope you enjoyed the photos and maybe it will encourage a few more to have a go at vintage racing. It doesn't have to be expensive provided you are prepared to buy scruffy well used cars and spend time tidying them up.

Thanks for looking

Tony
