Race report - 11th July 2024 - Mike Dove Memorial Classic Grand Prix
.
We had a grid full of cars...but no marshals tonight so 'TRACK!' was called with every deslot...yes there were a few.
.
We decided to race with the track at 12V which made the cars easier to drive.
We also ran six minute heats to make up for all the predicted deslots and race stoppages.
.
First round was a grid full of Standard Class Cartrix cars, Ed & Kevs cars with Cartrix motors which have no brakes and Brian's D50 with a Scalextric motor as his motor died...still classed as a 'Back 2 Basics' as it's a bog standard motor that's still slow.
.
Ed raced the same car all night with what turned out to be a broken guide holder...he had to drive carefully and limp through the last three races.
.
Second round saw Brian's Vanwall and Kev's Merc W154 join Ed's Cartrix.
.
At the end of the night we enjoyed racing these at the lower voltage.

Dyno 2.0
Designed the above Dyno a while ago, using a propriety hall effect sensor and digital counter for testing motors for club racing. From this testing, it was found that the motor rpm is effectively unloaded as the motor will spool the flywheel to near maximum unloaded rpm of the motor. Changing the flywheels for heavier ones only gives a perception of the motors ability to operate under load as the spool time is not measurable without going into data logging. The missing element is some form of load that is not overcome by inertia, and the simplest form is using a mechanical brake block or a fan pushing air.
The solution I went with is to couple a parasitic motor geared to the other end of flywheel shaft, the connections of which are then connected to a switched brake pot. The pot selects either open connection (No load), or steps through a braking effect via diodes or resistors and hence will load the test motor. This has the advantage over the mechanical forms as it is adjustable on the fly to suit different motors with preset steps.
The initial brake circuit used a diode chain but after I burnt out a set of diodes went over to some spare 6 ohm metal case high wattage resistors wired for 6, 9, 12 & 15 ohms on a rotary pot. These need to be 10W+ rated as the load is applied for a greater duration than conventional brake pots would see in a controller.
Parasitic motor used is a ball raced Scaleauto blue 18K rpm with low ratio gearing, chosen for low torque and the ball raced armature so that the ‘zero’ load is as low as possible. The cradle will take any boxer long or short can or an S can/FC130 can drive (with screw mounting holes).
The tower and motor cradle from the original design has been modified to take the parasitic motor mounted under the motor cradle, plus the test motor clamp screw hole has been changed to take a brass insert instead of relying on the plastic thread which fails with repeated use. The brass inserts are available from Ebay and can be fitted using a soldering iron, by locating the iron tip in the insert and pushing down in to the cradle hole. The test cradle will take Boxers, Flat 6's and S cans using the packing pieces shown.
The sensor wheel has been modified to take a Fly/PSR/NSR 8mm x 5mm round magnet in a profiled pocket as these work just as well as the supplied magnet and most of us have stock stuck to the nearest metal surface.
Final set of parts is a DVM tower which takes a propriety DVM module to monitor voltage/current, the brake pot tower with banana plug sockets for monitoring voltage and current and a tray to put the motor packing spacers in.
Dyno V2.0
In use motors, are spooled up unloaded to reach a steady rpm, then the brake pot is switched in to ramp up the load to a setting appropriate for that type of motor. The test motor rpm will then fall to a ‘loaded’ value which can be compared across the range of motors to be tested.
Below is the V2.0 STLfiles.

Because the Grundig Lancia 037 version of Fly appealed to me, I bought this one.
The first thing I noticed was the wrong year on the plinth. Darniche drove this 037 during the Rally d'Antibes in 1986, not in 1983, as stated.
Due to an accident on the public road, he couldn't reach the finish.
Upon further inspection of the slot car itself, I noticed that the windows were not properly positioned on the inside of the roof.
I decided to solve this by carefully removing the interior tray, where I quickly found the cause.
The melted material from one fuel cap at the inside of the body was blocking space, preventing the correct installation of the windows.
After the fuel cap pin was shortened and glued, the windows fit perfectly into the body.
I thought I had completed the job successfully, but that turned out to be too optimistic.
When mounting the bodywork on the floor pan, I noticed that the bodywork above the front wheel arches was torn on both sides.
This couldn't be repaired and it was my own fault, I thought, so I bought a new one.
The windows on that car were also not perfectly positioned, but not as bad as the first car.
On this car I noticed small hairline cracks in the paint above both front wheel arches, which are not present on my other Fly 037 Lancias.
This confirms that Fly has a serious problem in the production process that quality control should pay attention to.
Despite all these issues, I still think it is a nice version of the Lancia 037.
Scx escort clsworth shaft drive 4x4 models. Are thy any good or do they need mods & tuning to go well? Aalso what about motor upgrades? Can anybody advise me
hi guys i want to get a 3D primted rs200 evolution body shell. I thought pf scalextric body but to scaleauto size + some mods. Then the chassis too custom built s i can try out some ideas that if work out will be a one off build plus possibly a body kit to widen the wheel arches by a couple of mills. These are wht i need so far but i have lots more plans too. Any ideas where i can get this built (3D printed)? Any thoughts welcome
Hello, happy to be joining this forum. My question is simply what are the dimensions of this Policar Layout.
I plan to build a table and obtaining the extra track I need.
Thank you
As you may be aware, we are having some issues on the forum at the moment.
Attached pdf files are showing a 503 error, image enlargements aren't working, and we have one member who can't upload photos, though whether that's the same issue or not I don't know.
The 503 error usually indicates a server problem, and therefore it's more an issue for our hosting company whom I have contacted, and who are trying to fix it. But it's not a given that the problem is with the server. As always with any website, it can be a bit of a mistake to point the finger at any one element, as it's almost inevitably some sort of communication problem between the various technologies which serve up this hopefully coherent whole that we know as a website.
For this site, we have forum software, wordpress software, and hand coded pages. Behind that we have the server where we host it all, we have two mySQL databases which serve up the forum, and the wordpress content, we have the PHP which works it all, and I'm sure there are many elements I'm not even aware of behind that.
I guess all of that is leading up to me asking for a little patience, whilst we try to sort this out. We have to let our hosting company look at things first, because although communication is painfully slow, and progress is so far non-existent, they do have a dedicated tech team who are far more knowledgeable than I.
They have made a couple of changes to the backend tonight, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to have worked.
Whilst we wait for them to sort it out, if anybody has a pdf they desperately need to work, just PM me and I will sort it it out.
Finally got round to registering so I can post. Been far too busy playing with my toy cars .............
