SCX upgrade path?
#1

Is there a recognised upgrade path for the SCX motors anyone?

Adapters to fit a Slot.it style motor or a long can, or an alternative to the SCX motorpod maybe?

I have several and they are great looking cars E.G Fiat 131 Abarth, SEAT Toledo GT and Renault Sport RS 01 but the performance doesn't match their looks.

No doubt there are 3D printed chassis out there but I'm really looking to just swap out the motors for something more 'mainstream'.

I run them magless by the way.

Thanks for any useful responses.  Thumbup

Hello Top Down,....as well a several 3D printed adapters, Slot-it do make an adapter to allow the use of a typical FC-130 motor in the SCX cars.

Slot-it # SP08.

Mm? I think I've seen something like that in my 'Don't know what it is but don't chuck it away' box of bits.

Thinking further about SCX motors....

In my experience it seems like the armature winding is too tame for the magnets or the magnets are too strong for the armature wind.

I always thought the SCX motor was a good subject for rewinding/reworking if I ever felt motivated enough....which is unlikely.

I seem to remember a club member saying a Parma Deathstar armature fit the SCX cans

A quick google search finds info regarding this 'tweak' back in 2006

While it does fit,...the "Deathstar is wound with 70T of 30 AWG wire, which for the stock SCX magnets is a touch too much, as the motor will run hot particularly with any "homeset" type power supply.

If anyone is planning a rewind, 80T of 31 AWG wire is much more appropriate, but will still need a decent power supply ( 5+ amps min.)  a comm. true, and some better motor brushes, to replace the hideous things from SCX.

This wind will be a considerable step up from stock (approx. 35/40 K), with very good torque......and will likely be beneficial on only the longer/wide open club tracks.

A quick note/tip on the stock SCX motor brushes,...if the motor has been oiled/used these brushes tend to hold oil, which will cause the brushes to deteriorate quickly and the "stuff" will clog the comm slots, reducing performance/response. There is a quick fix that really works wonders for the SCX brushes..take them out, noting left/right, and, top/bottom......place the brushes on a hot (clean) soldering iron, and when they stop smoking, let them cool, and replace as they came out. (Clean the comm slots before replacing).

Cheers

An SCX rewind + for a club member,....80T x 31AWG,....Mura comm (trued), epoxied/balanced, magnets zapped, 16D brushes etc. etc.

All very interesting but it's challenge enough for me to find and use that adapter, especially since an initial tidy of my room while my wife was away for a couple of weeks.

I CAN now work at the bench in my room - but can't find anything as nothing is where it was pre-tidy up!

It WAS a mess but at least I knew where everything was.  Bigsmile

You need to look at your bench like a game of Tetris. It helps to keep it clean when everything has a specific place to go.

The bench is a disaster of parts and tools when scratch building a car.

I have designed and printed several motor pods for SCX cars to allow mabuchi or boxer motors to be installed:
2 pins motor  pods

single pin motor pods

I have also designed an adptor to allow boxer motors to be installed on non poded chassis but surgery is needed,Lancia Delta chassis before surgery

after surgery

adaptor fitted
