Some Cyclists !
#1

Specifically, those that stay 2 or 3 abreast on town roads with parked cars, country roads, just about any road really !
I myself have a nice bike, a Cannondale CX4 quick (not with me on it  Rofl) and when on rides out with a mate, we will always fall into single file as soon as we see or hear a vehicle coming behind, or oncoming if the road is narrow or the vehicle wide.
But the amount that don't do this when I am driving in my car just beggars belief. They are on a road with vehicles that can be traveling 3-4 times their speed, and yet they hog the whole side of the road and then get irate when some cars don't give them much room.
It seems its the "lycra warrior's" that tend to do this most, "normal" cyclists seem to use common sense round these parts.

And they all believe they OWN the roads. Drives me nuts.

I take it you might have heard of that awful incident here in Belgium a couple of months ago where a couple were walking their dog and the cyclist came up behind them and shouted at them to move - some comments were made and the cyclist got off his bike and killed the dog. He did not get away with it and was arrested as photos were taken of the incident. Just cannot believe some of them. My good mates here are fanatical cyclists and he agrees with 'us' and he like you is very considerate rider. But you are few and far between!

I used to be a keen cyclist in my younger days, but I always considered it just a common courtesy to drop into single file when there was other traffic about.

The roads round here are all narrow and twisty, but yesterday we suddenly came across a bunch of about forty cyclists coming toward us round a tight corner, four or five abreast, and several on completely the wrong side of the road.

I'm not sure when these road warriors became a thing, but it must surely occur to them that a car is always going to come out of any contact better than a cyclist.

What happened to the good old days? This was my "road warrior" back in the early 70's. She was a beauty.

Keep in mind there were a lot less cars and bikes on the road back then.

I live in Toronto, Canada. A small fishing village of about 6.2 million people. I'm the 4th igloo on the left. I have been hearing promises of new highways in the Toronto area for 30+ years. The latest politician voted into office finally admitted that there isn't enough real estate, and hasn't been since the 50's. There are no new areas within the city to put new highways? Duh! They just figured that out now?

At least Toronto has new bicycle lanes opening up all across the city. Plus 17-km of dedicated paved bike trails around the city.

Make sure you have a dash-cam for when that day comes when someone jumps in front of you. It's always best to let the facts speak for themselves.

Not feeling much empathy with the OP.
During my life I've been a keen cyclist and more often  than not ride alone.
I've been smacked off my bike 3 times by careless car drivers. Always their fault.
The last one pulled out of a junction right in front of me. The incident would have hurt a motorcyclist even worse.
Cost her insurance £10 thousand.

Why do some believe

- "i live here so I take priority"
AONBs like Surrey Hills are funded centrally so all of the country pays for the upkeep
We should be proud of the olympic legacy

- cyclists don't pay road tax
Just 'cause I'm out on my bike doesn't mean I don't own 2 cars (i do own 2 cars , one of which is my mk5 GTi)

Having said that, some cyclists are selfish but so are some motor vehicle drivers, speeding in built up areas, driving on the pavement, intimidating pedestrians.

If the pandemic has taught us anything it must be that life is too short, precious and fragile not so share the space.
If you're gritting your teeth behind the wheel instead of rolling your eyes, you're are heading for stress related cause of death.
Chill out... (and smile at the state of the fat man at the back in lycra)

True, there are plenty of idiot drivers and motorcyclist's too, in all instances though, all it takes is common sense and courtesy.
I can see all viewpoints, having been a motorcyclist, and currently car driver and cyclist, so I feel justified in my grump  Bigsmile

In our city, there are far too many cyclists who feel it is their prerogative to cycle wherever they wish - against the flow of traffic, through red lights, along crowded pavements - add idiots on electric scooters into the mix and no wonder I have no desire to go out anymore . . .

The reality is of course that the vast majority of cyclists are sensible and behave accordingly. As in all aspects of life there are loud-mouth virtue-signallers who become very visible and become the stereotype.

recently whilst driving home through Hawick where the local council are upgrading flood defenses ( i think )
these works have a very long traffic controlled one way system in operation
whilst waiting for the green light , a cyclist filtered to the front of the queue
when the lights changed the cyclist set off casually and no one could pass him
it took so long that the lights had changed and traffic from around the corner coming in the opposite direction had entered the one way system causing a jam
at this point , the cyclist just hopped up the curb onto the footpath and carried on his journey , smiling as he turned to view the jam he had caused
as you can imagine a few choice words were muttered whilst the culprit sauntered merrily on his way
could this cyclist have prevented this ? could he have dismounted and walked ? could he have hopped up the curb earlier onto the deserted foot path ?
my work involves lots of traveling (1k+ mls/wk is the norm ) and this is only one instance of the many crazy driving hazards encountered daily

btw ... he is NOT paying tax for that bike , he maybe paying for other vehicles .. fine ... but he is NOT for that vehicle .. nore are ANY other cyclists

obviously this is a one off
but as stated , these seem to be getting more frequent in this health conscious era
i understand there will always be the 'bad apples' from time to time
but it seems that some cycling habits are in a similar category to other subjects where a counter argument is just not PC or allowed

anyhow im getting off the box now
just my 2p

To lighten the mood of this thread. Bigsmile
Not meaning to undermine Toronto Ken's post of  the "wedge" bike above but....

These are my son's  pair of Raleigh Choppers , the original arrow wedge.

Red "the hot one" mk3 from 2004
Fizzy lemon mk2 from the 70's

Hoping that these will buy me a few beers when I get around  to selling them.
