Hello LHP,
It really depends on what chassis you have to start with.
Brass inserts in Evergreen styrene tubing with screws is very common. 2-56 or 4-40 size threads will both work. 4-40 being a bit stronger, but heavier.
I mount the body posts to the chassis and shave the posts until they sit at the desired height. It takes several tries to get it right.
For this car I used razor blades under the rocker panels to help the body sit even on the posts.
My apologies for switching cars but the McLaren isn't quite finished yet. The body posts are epoxied into the body while the posts are still attached to the chassis. Everything needs to line up while doing this step. 5-minutes later, you have a car in one piece.
I use countersunk screws to allow the chassis to sit close to the track.
I hope this helps?
Ken

LHP,
You are most welcome.
Please ask questions and/or post photos of your project. Others will likely jump in and help when we can see what you're up against.

Are 2-56/4-40 the brass inserts or the Styrene tubing? Where did you order the brass inserts? So basically I need to know the size of the tubing and the same w/the brass. Sorry, just have never done anything like this before. Ordered a couple of different chassis for 2 different cars I want to convert. 1/32 32 Ford coupe and a 1/24 Triumph TR7.

Hello LHP,
There are many brass inserts available on the market.

The Evergreen styrene tubing is available at many hobbies shops.

I like to buy brass inserts by the box from Spaenaur out of Kitchener, Ontario. Canada. Part number 628-575 at $ 0.19 each Cdn funds. That's $19 a box of 100. Enough for 50-cars at 2-posts per car. Never say you won't use 100 inserts. I've already gone through several boxes.

I use number 227 Evergreen styrene tubing. The Spaenaur inserts fit into the tubing perfectly with a light tap of a hammer, and won't pull out.
I buy 4-40 screws and washers from Spaenaur too. Once you've bought from Spaenaur. It's hard to buy elsewhere.

Apologies for hi-jacking the thread but I’m looking for the same info albeit in metric (uk based)
Anyone know what size inserts I’ll need to fit 227 tube? M3 inserts I’ve found state 3.7-4mm hole diameter
Thanks

Hi Rob,
Spaenaur also has metric fasteners and ships all over the world Fedex. Reasonable shipping rates.
Check the brass insert page/link above. Brace yourself. It's a big catalogue. You'll need to look up the specs of the specific insert to see what metric insert fits #227 Evergreen styrene tubing.
I just ordered matching 4-40 screws on the same order with the 4-40 brass inserts. 4-40 is very common and fits the 227 tubing perfectly.
I know the inserts and screws are dirt cheap. Let me know what they quote you for shipping? It's worth investigating.

After some googling M3 brass inserts are the equivalent to 4-40 for those using metric,
Picked up 25 inserts and screws to suit for a £10, should me through for a while and if I go through them quickly, I'll buy in bulk next time round.
Thanks for all your advice on this thread and again, apologies for hijacking
