Manx Slot Car Club - 2026 race reports & results
#71

Race report and results - 23rd July June 2026 -
  • Saloons + Small Saloons + Group 5 Saloons
  • NSR Moslers + NSR Mosler ‘Club Challenge 2026’ #6
  • SRF F1 Sidecars
.
Six of us racing Saloons and NSR Moslers… and five racing SRF Sidecars.
.
Saloons + Small Saloons + Group 5 Saloons

.
  • Three Racer Group 5 Saloons… Dave & Brian racing Capris plus Geoff’s Mustang
  • Two Saloons… Chris’s Honda Civic and Ed’s Opel Calibra
  • One Small Saloon… Kev’s Anglia
.
Heat #1 saw Chris’s Honda line up on the inside lane, Ed’s Calibra on the outside lane both cars making Kev’s Anglia look very small in between them.  The Anglia went straight off the corner on lap two to then have to chase down the Honda Civic and eventually pass it eight laps later.  Ed managed his best score in Blue lane for a change.
.
It was great to see the other three (Group 5) saloons line up together in Heat #2, with Geoff’s Mustang finishing a few car lengths ahead of Brian’s Capri.  Dave’s new Gold Leaf Capri got its first run out in this heat and looks fabulous!
.
Heat #4 saw a first for us, Brian, Ed & Chris set off with Brian’s Capri comfortably pulling away until lap 5 when it stopped after coming out of the tunnel… The race was paused whilst Geoff checked it over… to find a strip of black tape covering one of the guide braids!... how???  By this time he was exactly one lap behind Chris’s Honda.  Once the race commenced Brian pushed to make that lap back which he did and on lap 19 retook the lead with 9 seconds of the race to go.

.
NSR Mosler ‘Club Challenge 2026’ #6 + NSR Moslers (track at 11v for this event)

.
  • Five ‘Club Challenge 2026’ NSR Moslers… Geoff, Kev, Brian, Chris & Ed
  • One non ‘Club Challenge 2026’ NSR Mosler… Dave
.
These are quick even at the reduced voltage.  In fact they’re easier to drive quicker at 11v than at 12v because there’s fewer deslots.
.
Heat #4 was the closest finish as Brian lost a lap after a tangle with Ed’s car which handed the lead to Geoff’s car and it stayed this way for about one minute until Geoff had a deslot which allowed Brian to catch right up again and win by less than one second.
.
Heat wins for Kev, Dave & Brian.

.
SRF F1 SIDECARS - (we race these every week)

.
Dave came down early and set-to working on George’s sidecar but couldn’t quite get it ready to race for tonight, but it’s very close.
…likewise Ed’s sidecar which nearly saw first track action tonight.
.
Five SRF Sidecars tonight with more to come!
In order of appearance on the track we saw:
  • Brian, Mike, Dave, Ed, Kev, Chris
.
Geoff was the first of us to get his SRF Sidecar on the track and has slowly ironed out the niggles… and it’s one of the nicest running and quick outfits.
Kev was the second of us to get his outfit on the track and seems at last to have found a setup that doesn’t need a change of gearing, tyre compound, ballast or screw adjustment… for now!... but I think I heard a squeak coming from it, reminiscent of Brian’s from a few weeks ago… where’s that oil bottle?
Dave seemed to have a bit of a wayward Sidecar tonight with some strange deslots but still managing some quick laps.  He said it goes great on his track but not the same as the club track.  Maybe it’s the extra grip that the club track’s surface polyurethane floor paint gives.
Chris & Brian were just over half a lap apart at the end of racing, Brian mostly losing out on Blue lane but it’s now as quick as it was the first week he raced it but couldn’t catch Chris’s RAF livery Sidecar.

.
Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:
  • Gearing - 3:1 or thereabouts, i.e. 11/34, 12/34 or 12/36.  This gives plenty of acceleration and brakes and more than enough top speed.
  • 10mm wide tyres gives a great selection of tyre choices, tried and tested compounds in this size on BallaYorkley are NSR Alan Mann Untragrips, Thunderslot 002 or 004’s and NSR Zero graining tyres (if you have the patience to true them as they take ages!)
  • A good chunk of ballast down the centre of the chassis seems to work well.
  • A small diameter front tyre so it doesn’t foul the chassis or touch the bodywork.
  • How tight the bodyshell fixing screws are seems to have a big effect on handling, trial & error here.
  • N.B. control in corners, trying to keep both rear tyres either side of the slot/braid to prevent tyre degradation on the drivers side wheel.
.
A ‘gentleman's agreement’ formulated after a discussion with the SRF design team to keep the racing close for everyone:
  • Slotcarmann Harrier 26k handout motors
  • 10mm wide tyres
  • No tyre treatment once Sidecar racing starts
  • Ballast inside the outfit only
.
Three videos this week…enjoy!

Race report and results - 6th August 2026 -
  • Italian Cars - Grande Corse #1
  • Italian Cars - Grande Corse #2
  • SRF F1 Sidecars
.

Italian Cars - Grande Corse -

.
We saw twelve different Italian cars on track tonight, Paul & Mike opted to race one car twice, the rest of us chose two different cars.
  • Chris opted to race an out of the box Scalextric Pagani (with NSR red tyres), lights ablaze, and was promised an extra lap if he did three clean runs… (* which he managed).  This was the only Standard Class car.
  • Brian raced the only Small Class car.
  • Kev raced the only Modified Class car.
  • Two Open Class cars raced by Andy & Geoff.
  • The rest were Prostock Class cars.
.
It was a fun mix of cars right across the full spectrum of what we race from basic ready-to-run Scalextric, right through to scratch built racing specials.  The important thing is everyone enjoys driving the car they choose for these events.
…and we did this twice as we saw a change of Italian machines in the second round of racing

.

SRF F1 SIDECARS - (we race these every week)

.
During practice, George was getting some good lap times in.  Like others have found, the passenger needs securely gluing in place… more on this later in the race report!
Six SRF Sidecars tonight with more to come! (and a sneak peek of future SRF releases)
In order of appearance on the track we saw:
  • Andy, Geoff, Paul, Brian, Kev, Mike
.
Kev’s fluoro green outfit was the most consistent tonight, with three 23 lappers, the 69 lap barrier has been breached.
.
Andy was back and his outfit was also flying round the track but a few ‘off’s’ in his favourite Yellow lane cost him two laps and also possibly that 69 lap barrier.
.
Mike’s Gulf coloured outfit is now definitely ‘on the pace’ a quick Sidecar that had a brilliant race with Brian’s outfit in Heat #2, both crossing the finish line together.  Mike in Blue lane, Brian in Red lane…
…that turned out to be the best of the three runs for Brian who’s now trying to find the performance it had on its maiden outing a few weeks ago.
.
Paul seemingly had a problem before racing started as one rear tyre wasn’t touching the track, this turned out to be the lead ballast stuck underneath the chassis.  His Sidecar has the v.2 chassis for plastic track and is a nice smooth runner with a best result in Yellow lane.
…* Please make sure any ballast is inside the Sidecar *
.
Geoff’s Sidecar is a smooth racing outfit and had an interesting race as Heat #3 saw him alongside Mike & Brian.  The race being yellow flagged half way through as a screw was found on the track, shortly followed by a crash involving a near fatal accident as an unsecured passenger was slung down the track and two outfits ended up in the same lane… the race ending a few laps later with all three Sidecars on the same lap.

.

  • A good chunk of ballast (inside the Sidecar) down the centre of the chassis seems to work well.
  • A small diameter front tyre so it doesn’t foul the chassis or touch the bodywork.
  • How tight the bodyshell fixing screws are seems to have a big effect on handling, trial & error here.

Race report and results - 13th August 2026 -
  • Sports + Small Sports
  • TV & Film cars *CANCELLED*
  • SRF F1 Sidecars (double session)
.
Sports + Small Sports

.
Five club members tonight
  • Ed raced his Porsche 904 (proxy car)
  • The rest were Prostock Class cars.
.
Ed stayed out of the way of the other cars and just focussed on his own race, the sole Small Sports entry, was guaranteed a class win.
.
Dave borrowed one of Brian’s NSR Moslers and proceeded to post the second fastest hot lap with it “that’s faster than I can manage” said Brian.
Meanwhile, Brian raced his favourite Porsche 956 and just managed to beat Dave by 0.16 of a lap (that’s equivalent to one second).
.
Mike also raced an NSR Mosler and managed a couple of 25 lappers, the best one being in Blue lane.
.
Kev raced his trusty Thunderslot Mclaren, managing a 30 lapper in Blue lane.  Brian’s Porsche was the closest to get to it on the track.

.
TV & Film Cars *CANCELLED*
.
TV & Film car racing was cancelled due to lack of interest so we agreed to have a Sidecar double session…
.
SRF F1 SIDECARS - (double session)

.
A couple of new Sidecar outfits raced for the first time tonight:
  • Ed’s black and gold outfit
  • Kev’s ‘psychedelic serpent’ outfit (plastic track version)
Session #1 …in heat order
  • Brian, Ed, Dave, Kev, Mike
Session #2 …in heat order
  • Mike, Dave, Kev, Brian, Ed
.
Yes, there were a few ‘incidents’ which is now seen as the norm with Sidecar racing.
.
Another passenger was thrown through the air as Mike’s outfit deslotted just before the line, hit the wall and bounced into the Red lane… just as Kev’s outfit came round the last bend… the passenger got to turn one before both of them!
Mike’s outfit is flying, getting into the 6.5’s is quick and was tonight runner-up to Kev’s new outfit.
.
Dave and Brian both had a few ‘offs’, Brian wanted to retire as he couldn’t understand what was catching the track (it’s the front edge of the nose as we saw looking carefully).
Brian borrowed Dave’s spare outfit later on to finish the evening.
Dave’s Sidecar is as quick as Mike’s but this week wasn’t as predictable.
…back to the team garages for more tuning!
.
Ed’s shiny black (and gold stripes) outfit went well, for his first night racing one he did well, 7.1’s in both sessions.  Once he gets the hang of driving these he’ll catch up.

.
Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:

CLUB REVOSLOTS

.
Seven club members tonight.
.
The overall result was very close between Kev & Andy for top spot, very close between Brian H & Mike for third spot and less than half a lap between Brian L & Geoff, with Ed closest to the cars ahead in Blue lane.
.
A couple of cars have been taken for repairs at home, both with broken rear wings which makes them look shabby and spoils the looks of a couple of great runners.

…all in all, a good session of racing… next:
.
GRAND PRIX & F1

.
Four classes of cars were represented tonight.
  • Kev with a Lotus 24 in ‘Modified Prewing F1’
  • Geoff with a Policar Ferrari 312 B2 in ‘Prostock Classic F1’
  • Brian L, Mike, Brian H & Ed with NSR F1’s in ‘Prostock F1’
  • Andy with a Ligier JS11 in ‘Open F1’
.
Ed joined Geoff & Kev in three races which saw really close races between Ed & Kev with Geoff driving a car that is quick enough to nearly keep up but his overall score spoiled by the deslots.
Ed had what is probably his best race with an NSR F1, Heat #3, Yellow lane with Kev in Blue lane and Geoff in Red lane… and scored the second best Yellow lane score of the night!
.
Andy’s Ligier was too fast for anything else on track to match.
.
Brian L & Mike were very close for top spot in Prostock F1, about 1.5 seconds the difference overall.
.
Ed finished 3rd overall and Brian H only really getting comfortable with his borrowed NSR F1 whilst in Blue lane.

.
SRF F1 SIDECARS

.
One new Sidecar outfit raced for the first time tonight:
  • Brian H’s silver liveried outfit… which is probably the third fastest one we’ve seen!  That 6.4 hot lap is right behind Andy & Kev’s Sidecars…
…Geoff (who built it as a birthday pressie for Brian) saw the positive side of being beaten tonight “at least I know which way to go with mine now”.  That’s not to say Geoff was slow because he’s still getting those low 6.6’s
Brian said he really enjoyed racing his new Sidecar, which is great to hear.
.
Mike thought he was a little off last week’s pace but managed a couple of 21 lappers and second places though.
.
Brian L has had a few teething problems with his outfit and seems to have seen off the last of the gremlins so confidence took time to build and it was flying again in his last race whilst in Red lane, a low 6.7 hot lap is back to where he was with it the first week..
.
It was the second week out for Ed’s black outfit, he is consistent with it, three 17 lappers with the best of those in Blue lane for a change.
.
Andy & Kev were evenly matched in Yellow & Blue lanes, Kev’s multicolour serpent having a few ‘off’s’ in Red lane making the difference as Andy’s Gulf outfit finished a lap clear.

.
What we’re seeing with these is one week you can go great with one, the next week you can’t match it, then the week after you’re quick again.  Racing just wouldn’t be as interesting without jeopardy would it?
Yes of course there were ‘incidents’, it wouldn’t be Sidecar racing if there weren’t any would it.
.
Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:
  • Gearing - 3:1 or thereabouts, i.e. 11/34, 12/34 or 12/36.  This gives plenty of acceleration and brakes and more than enough top speed.

NSR Mosler ‘Club Challenge 2026 #7’ + NSR Moslers

.
Seven club members tonight, six ‘Club Challenge’ cars plus the club Mosler.
.
There were a few missed laps due to ‘incidents’ on the last corner:
Brian L missed 1 lap in Red
Geoff missed 2 laps in Yellow
Those laps didn’t affect Brian but did promote Geoff in front of Chris.
.
Lots of really fast laps tonight, four of us getting round under 6 seconds, Chris with a 6.0 and Brian H & Ed with 6.2’s.
Watching the video, they’re all quick!

.
Saloons + Small Saloons + Group 5 Saloons

.
Three classes of cars were represented tonight.
  • Ed & Kev in ‘Modified Saloon’
  • Brian H, Chris & Geoff in ‘Prostock Saloon’
  • Andy & Brian L in ‘Open Saloon’
.
Chris started with a Nissan Skyline Group 5 and had to quickly swap to his trusty Honda Civic due to problems with the Nissan.  This cost him four laps and opened the door for Brian H to snatch the class win with the NSR Abarth 500.
.
Ed, Brian H & Geoff raced each other for the three heats and gave the watching marshals some great racing as they were really close.
Although Brian’s Abarth won his three races, Ed ran him close in Heat #3 as his Ninco Calibra was only 4 or 5 car lengths behind and closing as they crossed the line.
Geoff’s Scooby was the quickest of the three cars but not as predictable.
.
Andy’s closest race was Heat #6, his Spirit Peugeot 406 crossing the line one lap ahead of Kev’s MRRC Toyota Celica.

.
SRF F1 SIDECARS

.
  • Seven SRF F1 Sidecars
.
Firstly let’s get my scrutineers head on…
We are seeing screws falling out during racing, this is because 3D printed plastic isn’t solid like an injection molded part and the screws don’t grab the plastic.  You can mitigate this by smearing a bit of superglue round the inside of the threaded hole then letting it cure for a few minutes, then the screws will hold much tighter. It also helps greatly if you use long screws.
…which means from now on ALL Sidecars must have tape over the screws.
.
Brian H was involved in the closest race for the win, Heat #5, Andy in Blue lane finishing just over two seconds ahead.  Brian ended up second overall which pleased him greatly.
.
We had a couple of DNS/DNF’s tonight, Brian L with a detached guide block and Andy with a detached passenger still clinging onto the section of the sidecar that sits over the left rear wheel! after Ed’s black Sidecar slid off Yellow lane onto Blue lane just as Andy was flying round the corner behind with the inevitable collision.
Ultimately this meant a DNF for Brian in Heat #4 and a DNS in Heat #5
…and a DNF for Andy in Heat #6 after trying to race a limping Sidecar for a few laps
.
Incidents and jeopardy aplenty… that’s Sidecar racing, but they’ll be back, patched up and ready for next time.
.
A mention for the other outfits:
  • Kev was racing the green ‘thing’ this week, not as quick as last time out but probably got top spot due to Andy’s incident.
  • Geoff has a nice smooth consistent runner but it needs gearing up as it’s lacking top speed.
  • Chris had a few ‘offs’ in Red lane but a great run in Yellow lane in Heat #6.
  • Ed was off the pace tonight with a best run in Blue lane in Heat #1.

.
Here’s a reminder of the setups that seem to work well:
  • Gearing - 3:1 or thereabouts, i.e. 11/34, 12/34 or 12/36.  This gives plenty of acceleration and brakes and more than enough top speed.

Next week at the Manx Scalextric & Slot Car Club…
  • Targa Florio on all four club tracks!
  • SRF F1 Sidecars
.
I was asked what kind of cars can we race in the Targa Florio… so here’s a few cars we have seen on our tracks that you can use:
Alfa Romeo TZ2, Alfa Romeo T33, Aston Martin DBR1, Austin Mini Cooper, Austin Healey 3000, Cooper Monaco T61 (King Cobra), De Tomaso Pantera, Ferrari 250 GTO, Ferrari 250 GTO 64, Ferrari 275 P2, Ferrari 312 PB, Ferrari 412 P,  Ferrari 512 S, Fiat 124 Spider, Ford GT40, Jaguar C-type, Jaguar E-type, Jaguar XK120, Lancia Fulvia HF, Lola T70 Mk.3 GT, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, Porsche 356, Porsche 904, Porsche 908/02, Porsche 908/03, Porsche 911, Shelby Cobra…
The list is much longer than this but they’re all cars that raced in the Targa Florio before 1974
