Lotus 56 "Indy" 1968
#1

I was always a Graham Hill fan, and when I saw the pictures of the Lotus 56 in the STP colours being built for the 1968 Indianapolis 500, I knew I had  to build one !!

Well , many many years passed without any build attempts, and it was just a few years back when AMT reissued their Lotus 56 static kit, that I decided that it was time to get on with it.

The kit body was used in fairly stock configuration, with just a few bits made/added, with wonderful decals from "Indycals", and Tamiya Flourescent red TS rattle can paint.

The wheels are Cox Lotus 30/40 wheels with repro original Ortmann formula tyres,.....Graham is a Cox drivers head/torso.

I did take the liberty of mounting the wing mirrors low to the body work (they should be on quite tall aluminum brackets), ...as "tall" wing mirrors are not the most robust on any slotcar.

As the model is quite long and narrow, it was never going to be a world beater on a slot track, so a fairly straightforward single rail chassis with plumber pans was built,...powered by a Plafit "Cheetah" motor, with a Sonic pinion, and Parma Crown. Considering the constraints of an extremely long guide lead, and a narrow track, the car does run extremely well.

Cheers
Chris Walker

Wonderful details everywhere you look.

Having just completed my first decal project, I feel qualified to say that that looks like a decal friendly body shape!

I love puttering with gears

Chris - wonderful work as usual Thumbup Thumbup

Not sure I agree with you on the winning races bit. Back in 2002 I bought a 1/32nd version of this car off a dealer and my son who was then 13, raced it in Bordo. He can second by a hairs breadth against racers like PDL and some UK champs. Car was superb.

It had a pin guide and a Pitman 196B motor, with independently rotating from wheels.

I also had a go at the same kit :

Not in the same class as yours (ignore split tyre - happened as I took the pic :) )
